I love maps.Yes, of course navigation and Mapquest have made our
lives so much easier and I am seriously dependent on them.
But I love to look at maps, as a passenger, it's fun to follow the route
and tick off the passing of miles and crossroads, not to mention
the personal challenge of folding it back along the original folds.
Enter artist Shannon Rankin who does amazing things with maps.
Treating them as mere pieces of decorated paper to be manipulated-
clipping out spirals, folding crevassed roses of ridges and faultlines,
pinning up confetti like clouds of circles and zigzags- she creates
neo-geographies, suggesting the potential for a broader landscape.
